How Far Is Merzouga From Marrakech — and How Long Does It Take?

The numbers

Distance: approximately 560 km by the standard route (N9 to Ouarzazate, N10 east, then the R702 to Merzouga).

Driving time, no stops: 8.5 to 9.5 hours depending on traffic at the Tichka pass.

Realistic time with the stops any tour includes: a day and a half in each direction. That is why the shortest honest itinerary is three days, and why a "one-day desert trip from Marrakech" is either the Agafay stone plateau half an hour away, or a fiction.

For comparison, Merzouga is around 470 km from Fes — about an hour less driving. If you are visiting both cities, crossing between them through the desert is almost always the better use of the same days.

The route, section by section

Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka pass (120 km, 2h). Steady climbing switchbacks to 2,260 metres, the highest road in North Africa. Widened in recent years but still winding — this is the section that troubles anyone prone to car sickness.

Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate (90 km, 1h30 plus your stop). Down into pre-Saharan country. The UNESCO ksar sits a few kilometres off the main road and is worth an hour.

Ouarzazate → Dades Valley (110 km, 2h). The road of a thousand kasbahs, past Skoura's palmeraie and the Valley of Roses.

Dades → Todra Gorge → Tinejdad (100 km, 2h). The gorges. Todra's walls rise 300 metres and the walk along the riverbed takes half an hour.

Tinejdad → Erfoud → Merzouga (140 km, 2h). Flat, red and increasingly empty, until the dunes appear on the left horizon about twenty minutes out.

Do you need a 4x4?

No. The road to Merzouga is paved the entire way, including the last stretch to the auberges at the edge of Erg Chebbi. A saloon car makes it fine.

The only off-road driving is optional and happens once you are there: the excursion around the erg to Khamlia, the fossil beds and the nomad camps, which needs a 4x4 and a driver who knows the tracks. Anyone insisting you need a 4x4 for the journey itself is upselling.

What you do want is air conditioning that works, in summer especially, and a driver who has done this road before — the last hour after dark, with unlit trucks and the occasional camel, is not the place to be learning it.

How many days do you actually need?

Three days is the minimum that includes a night in the dunes. Day three is a nine-hour drive back to Marrakech, which is the price of doing it in three.

Four days splits that return with a night in Ouarzazate or Skoura. One extra day removes the single hardest part of the trip, and it is the version we recommend most often.

Five days adds a second night in the desert and a day at the erg itself rather than on the road to it. If you can spare it, this is where the trip changes character.

Two days cannot reach Merzouga. It can reach Zagora, which is a real desert with modest dunes, seven hours south — a different, smaller experience, honestly described.

Can you drive it yourself?

You can, and some people do. Hire cars are cheap, the roads are decent and signposting is adequate.

The reasons most visitors do not: the Tichka pass is tiring; police speed checks are frequent and fines are cash on the spot; night driving is genuinely risky because of unlit vehicles and animals; and you will spend the whole journey navigating rather than looking out of the window. There is also nobody to introduce you at the camp, negotiate the camels, or explain what you are seeing.
