Choosing between them
Roughly in order of how far you travel for what you get:
Closest and coolest — the Ourika Valley is an hour away and runs about 10°C below the city, with a river, Berber villages and a waterfall scramble at the end of the road.
Best mountains — the Three Valleys goes higher and barer, up to Imlil beneath Mount Toubkal and on to the Oukaïmeden plateau at 2,600 metres.
Best single town — Essaouira, two and a half hours west on the Atlantic. Walled port, fish grills, and the only medina in Morocco laid out on a grid.
Best for an evening — the Agafay is forty minutes away and empty. It has no sand dunes and we will not pretend otherwise, but the sunset and the dark sky are real.
Most driving — Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, about eight hours on the road for five on the ground. If the Sahara is what you are really after, put two more days into it and go all the way to Merzouga instead.
