Agafay Desert Day Trip From Marrakech
The Agafay is a rocky desert of bare hills and dry riverbeds that starts thirty kilometres from Marrakech, with the snowline of the High Atlas along its southern horizon. It is not the Sahara and it has no sand dunes — what it has is genuine desert emptiness within forty minutes of your riad, which makes it the right answer when you have an afternoon rather than three days.

A starting price for one comfortable 4x4 carrying up to 4 people — not per person. What you finally pay depends on your dates, the accommodation you choose and any changes you make to the route. The camp dinner is charged separately by the camp.
Be clear about the trade-off. The Agafay is stone, not sand. Photographs that show golden dunes at Agafay were taken 550 kilometres away at Merzouga, and the camps here are closer to boutique hotels than to Berber caravans.
What it does deliver is real: an enormous silent landscape, the Atlas turning pink at sunset, sky full of stars, and none of it costing you a day of travel. If you want the actual Sahara, go to Merzouga.

How the day runs

Marrakech → the Agafay plateau
Afternoon pick-up from your riad. The road runs south past the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir and within half an hour the ground turns to bare grey-gold rock and the villages stop. First stop at a viewpoint over the dry riverbeds with the Atlas along the skyline.

Camels, quads or a walk
Whichever you have chosen: an hour on camelback across the plateau, a quad or buggy circuit on the tracks, or simply a guided walk down into one of the wadis. Families often split — quads for the teenagers, camels for everyone else.

Sunset and dinner at camp
Mint tea on a ridge for the sunset, when the Atlas goes pink and the plateau goes copper. Then dinner at a desert camp — tagine, salads, bread from the ground oven — with Gnaoua musicians and a fire. The sky here is genuinely dark; on a moonless night the Milky Way is obvious.

Good to know
Does the Agafay have sand dunes?
No. It is a stone desert — hamada — of compacted rock and dry riverbeds. Any photograph showing tall golden dunes near Marrakech is really Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, 550 km east. We would rather you knew before booking than after.
Is it worth going if we are also doing Merzouga?
Usually not for the landscape, but often yes for the evening — a sunset dinner in the Agafay is an easy, pleasant night out from Marrakech, and it is a completely different thing from a night in the dunes.
Can we do this in the morning instead?
Yes. Mornings are cooler and quieter, and better if you want to walk. Sunset is more popular because of the dinner camps, but there is nothing that requires the evening.
Are the camps suitable for families?
Very. They are close to the city, the tents are comfortable, dinner is early, and the drive home is short if a child has had enough. It is the easiest desert night in Morocco with young children.
How much is a dinner camp?
It varies a lot — from around €35 per person for a straightforward camp to several times that for the luxury ones with pools. Tell us your budget and we will name specific camps rather than a vague range.
