Day Trip From Marrakech to Essaouira
A private day on the Atlantic coast, two and a half hours west of Marrakech. Essaouira is a walled eighteenth-century port with cannon-lined ramparts, a working fishing harbour full of blue boats, a UNESCO-listed medina you can actually navigate, and a wide beach the trade wind never leaves alone.

A starting price for one comfortable 4x4 carrying up to 4 people — not per person. What you finally pay depends on your dates, the accommodation you choose and any changes you make to the route.
Essaouira is the antidote to Marrakech. The medina is laid out on a grid — a Frenchman designed it for a sultan in 1760 — so nobody gets lost, nobody hassles you much, and the whole place smells of salt and grilled sardines instead of spice and diesel.
It is a long day: five hours of driving for six hours there. Worth it, but if you fall for the place, tell us and we will turn it into an overnight instead.

How the day runs

Marrakech → the argan road → Essaouira
Pick-up at 8am. The road crosses the Chiadma plain into argan country — this tree grows nowhere else on earth — with a stop at a women's cooperative to see the nuts cracked and pressed by hand, and, in the right season, at the argan trees the goats climb to reach the fruit. Arrival in Essaouira around 10:30.

The ramparts and the port
Start at the Skala de la Ville, the sea bastion where the cannon still point at an empty Atlantic and Orson Welles filmed Othello. Down to the harbour for the boat sheds and the auction, then along the Skala du Port for the view back at the whole walled town.

Lunch off the fish stalls
The row of grills between the port and the medina gate: you pick your fish from the ice, agree the price by weight, and it comes back grilled with bread, salad and lemon fifteen minutes later. Cheap, excellent, and the reason a lot of people come.

The medina, the beach, and the road back
Free time in the medina — thuya woodwork, the jewellers' souk, the art galleries the town has collected since the sixties — or an hour on the beach where the trade wind fills the kitesurfing sails every afternoon. Departure around 4:30pm, back in Marrakech for early evening.

Good to know
How long is the drive?
About two and a half hours each way on a good road, with one stop. You get roughly six hours in Essaouira, which is enough for the ramparts, the port, lunch and the medina without hurrying.
Is one day enough, or should we stay over?
One day covers the sights comfortably. People who want the beach, the evening in the medina or the surf tend to wish they had stayed — we can arrange the overnight version with a riad inside the walls.
Will we see the goats in the argan trees?
Sometimes. It is a real behaviour, and it is also staged for photographs at a few roadside spots. Our drivers will show you the genuine article when it is around and tell you plainly when what you are looking at is set up for tips.
Is Essaouira windy all year?
Yes, and that is the point — the trade wind is what made it a port and what brings the kitesurfers. It also means it is cooler than Marrakech year-round, so bring a layer even in August.
